Citizen Action Tips & Tools
NOTE: Budget Decisions are being made in Olympia while you’re reading this. Time is of the essence.
1. Use only non-state resources to contact legislators and/or government officials. (It’s the law!)
2. Remember that you are making contact as a citizen of Washington state (and not as an official of your institution). However, you may identify yourself as a faculty member, student, administrator, etc.
3. If you are contacting legislators by e-mail, you may contact them one at a time (see below) or your mail program may allow you to use multiple addresses separated by a colon (CFR co-chair and UW faculty J.W. Harrington has provided details in this blog entry).
4. You may contact *only* your particular representatives from your district or you may contact your district representatives, members of the relevant budget and policy committees, and the governor’s office. See this map for district-specific contact information. Normally, CFR advises district-specific contacts; however, because the budget is a state-wide concern that affects all of our public institutions of higher education in varying ways, additional contact information is provided for your use.
5. Brief, personalized statements are best (time is short--your particular voice matters). Even a one-sentence statement (i.e., “Please don’t let Higher Ed in Washington state slip into disarray.”) is effective. An example of a more detailed statement can be found here and within the three documents noted below:
